Advancing Knowledge in Aging Studies

Through educational opportunities, CASAS bridges the gap between cutting-edge research and practical application in aging services, programs, and policy. We’re committed to fostering a community of professionals who are equipped to provide compassionate, culturally responsive, and high quality care.

Educational opportunities and support includes:

  • Expert-Led Training: Webinars, workshops, and conferences feature the latest research and best practices in aging services.

  • Practical Resources: Readily available reports, guides, and presentations are designed for immediate application.

  • Career Development: Pathways to enhance knowledge in aging are offered for social workers and other professionals.

  • Graduate Certificate Opportunities: The Aging Certificate is available through UC Berkeley’s School of Social Welfare.

  • Support for the Student Community: The UC Berkeley Gerontological Society of America chapter provides opportunities for students to connect, learn, and grow.
  • Critical Gerontology: CASAS’s focus on critical gerontology offers our students a unique lens, inviting them to consider the strengths, meaning, value, and diversity of aging at the intersection of systemic oppression and resistance.
  • Customized Learning: Students are given insightful opportunities through independent and group studies and colloquia.

Student Chapter for the Gerontology Society of America (GSA)

Since its inception, CASAS has served as a community for students interested in aging. More recently, CASAS has hosted events like “Breaking Bread” and “Careers in Aging” featuring experts on diverse topics from dementia to advocacy.

In August 2024, this group officially became UC Berkeley’s inaugural Gerontological Society of America (GSA) student chapter, led by founding officers Abby Raeside (President), Cora Becker (Vice-President), Mo’e Yaisikana (Treasurer), and Leyi (Joy) Zhou (Secretary).

We kick off the second year of our GSA student chapter with a new President, MSW student Lauren Yamasaki-Liske and Vice-President, MSW student Diana Mucino.
